Phoebe Street

With the benefit of generous timeframes to test ideas, our scope of intervention to this terrace in Islington has gradually reduced to the most essential elements, like a good sauce left to simmer. The existing unused garage will become a generous kitchen with a street-facing reading nook at one end. The rear deck is re-oriented to connect the kitchen garden and minimise overlooking of neighbouring properties. The small lean-to section of the terrace that already housed some cooking and bathing areas has been adjusted so that it could function as a separate guest quarter if required.

Supporting our client’s ambitions for a sustainable dwelling that prioritizes re-use of materials over making everything match perfectly, we have sought to develop a language of similar but discrete parts allowing the interventions to be undertaken in separate stages as found materials come to hand.
