Meadowbank

Located on Mitchell’s Island, near the Manning River, our clients are the custodians of a run-down farmhouse that has been in their family for three generations. Our brief was to advise on the sympathetic restoration of the original dwelling and the addition of a new ensuite and open-plan living area that would not detract from the modest scale and charm of the existing cottage.

Our strategy was to develop a contemporary open plan pavilion that matched the footprint of the existing farmhouse to create an equally weighted dialogue between the old and the new. The new pavilion is located behind the existing cottage and rotated at 90 degrees to frame the garden. This siting also allows the original scale of the cottage to be understood from the entry before discovering the second pavilion on approach.
